Internet

For Your Viewing Pleasure

If you install as many external viewers for your browser as you can, MPEG, .WAV, Adobe Acrobat .PDF and similar files will run automatically right after they are transferred.

From Page to Disk

Save your favorite Web pages to your hard disk so you can access the information locally. If the links were created with absolute paths, you'll be able to jump straight to the Net. But beware: Graphics won't appear unless you download them, and even then the display depends on whether the page creator used relative or absolute pathnames in the HTML code.

The Right Connections

Experiencing difficulties connecting your modem to the Net? Check the [Boot] section of your Windows SYSTEM.INI file, and make sure it reads
comm.drv=3Dcomm.drv
(the standard Windows communications driver).

Get Help

If you're confused about the Internet, you can turn to the Internet-related services available from the commercial online services. On America Online use Keyword: Internet or hit the Internet Connection button on the Main Menu screen. On CompuServe, GO: INTERNET or click the Internet button on the Services menu, and on Prodigy, Jump: INTERNET.

Internet Anywhere

Internet at Intervals

Schedule hourly e-mail downloads and daily news downloads by choosing Automatic Connections from the desktop.

In Search of the Word

Use the multiword search function integrated into the Web browser with the Open Text Web Search Index feature to conduct a word search.

Save More Time

To cut your ftp transfer online time, use Internet Anywhere's ftp macros.

Internet in a Box 2.0

A Hotlist of One's Own

Create your own hotlist in the Hotlist Menu by hitting the Open/New button and typing a name for your new hotlist file. Next, check off the Put Hotlist in Menu checkbox and you're ready to add your favorite sites.

Images at Your Fingertips

To copy an online image, place the cursor over it, right-click and you'll get a save-to-disk option. If the image is defined as a link, go to File/Document Source (the page must be freshly loaded, so you may have to hit Reload). Use the surrounding text for reference to locate the source of the picture you want.

Is Hayes Too Generic?

If you don't know your modem's actual make and model number, use the Modem/Initialize menu command and check (in the following order): Mercury Technologies 9600/14400, Hayes Optima 144 + FAX144, and GVC Technologies v.32bis until the modem does not report errors.

Back and Forth

Are you a keystroke junkie? After you've visited a URL, you can use ^f for forward and ^b for back.

Internet Chameleon 4.5

95 In '95

If you are using TCP/IP on your network as well as the Internet, you may want to make the Microsoft TCP/IP stack your primary protocol. To change the TCP/IP stack, simply rename the c:/netmanag/winsock.dll to winsock2.dll.{should the preceding file names be all caps?/cfs} Warning: Automatic Internet and Ping will not work with the Microsoft stack.

Access Anytime

Internet access is available from any application with the NEWTShooter menu in the active title bar window.

Keep Your Paycheck in Your Pocket

Cut charges by doing as much offline as possible; view Web pages, mail and news *without* logging on by using the preferences available in those apps. Web Surfer gives you two options: You can save copies of documents as part of their internal caching, or you can set preferences per document in the Retrieve/Properties menu. NEWTNews can download articles or entire newsgroups, and gopher saves directories of any server you travel to.

SuperHighway Access CyberSearch

Set the Margins

SuperHighway Access CyberSearch allows you to set a search margin by clicking on the Advanced button. You can define how many URLs are to be returned (fewer for narrow searches, more for broader searches) and increase the score if necessary.

In the Abstract

Using SuperHighway Access CyberSearch, each URL is returned with a short site description. Highlight the URL to see the abstract displayed before logging in to the site.

In Other Words . . .

After you've completed your search, click on the Other Words option for a list of similar words in the database and bring up the number of other sites that match the original key search word.

TCP Pro 2.0

Ramp Up Performance

To optimize performance with a workstation running Windows for Workgroups, TCP Pro 2.0 and a high-performance network adapter, use WFW 3.11 Network Setup, double-click on Network Telesystems TCP Pro VxD stack and adjust the Send Window from 8 to 10 or 12, the Receive Window from its default of 2920 to a number less than 11680 but greater than 2920. The new number must be a multiple of 1460. (Caution: The Receive Window's size is affected by the network adapter vendor's hardware implementation of Receive Buffers. Increasing the Send Window's size consumes small amounts of your computer's extended memory.)

More Data

To increase the amount of data received when you're using TCP Pro 2.0 remotely, first double-click on Connect, then click on Site or Session Setup, then select PPP and check the boxes for Protocol Compression and Address Compression. When used with modems that support the V.42 bis compression standard, this provides an approximate throughput gain.
